What to see in Les Houches
The village of Les Houches is overlooked by an impressive statue reminiscent of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Accessible on foot from the train station, this 25-meter-tall Christ the King statue stands at an altitude of 1,200 meters and watches over the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley. It was built in 1933 at the initiative of Father Claude Marie Delassiat, parish priest of Les Houches, to symbolize love and peace among people.
Recently designated a historic monument, this statue is one of the tallest in France.
“Cultivated lands” ideal for competitive skiing
As is often the case in the valley, the name “Les Houches” is a place name. It is said to derive from a root meaning “cultivated lands” and is believed to have been first used in the 14th century.
The orientation of its ski area makes Les Houches a popular ski resort known for the quality of its snow. Its gentle slopes allow skiers of all levels to enjoy the slopes.
Les Houches is also home to a world-renowned downhill run, the legendary World Cup ski race: the Kandahar, which will take place on January 30.
Be warned: although this run is called the “Verte des Houches,” it is by no means intended for beginners! It has a vertical drop of 870 meters over a length of 3,343 meters. The term “green” dates back to 1946, when slopes were first classified, and green denoted the most difficult runs.
Naturally quieter than the town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, the village of Les Houches guarantees you a relaxing getaway with the whole family, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
