Located at an altitude of 2,550 metres, the Lacs Noirs are the highest of the Aiguilles Rouges lakes.
The two Lacs Noirs lakes are glacial in origin and are regularly covered by ice, even when temperatures rise in early summer.
At the end of summer, the lakes give rise to small snowy icebergs that drift for a time and then melt. The two lakes only thaw late in the season.
Accessible from Planpraz, La Flégère and the arrival point of the Index chairlift.
