Hike to the refuge of Albert 1er from the Col de Balme

in Argentière
Presentation

Located on the edge of the Glacier du Tour, starting point for many races. The climb in normal conditions is a very pleasant hike in a glacial setting of great splendour.

From the arrival station of the Autannes chairlift, head right along a path that passes close to the outlet of Lac de Charamillon (2271 m, often dried up), and slingshot across the entire mountainside towards the glacier: round a small spur and up a slope that overhangs a rather tricky ravine (ramps). Then join the moraine at the foot of the refuge, which can be reached without too much difficulty.

Further information is available from the Tourist Office or the Office de Haute-Montagne, and in our trail guide.
