The Chemin des Diligences path opened way back in 1792 and links Martigny and Chamonix via the Col des Montets. It takes walkers through the authentic hamlets of Vallorcine which faithfully perpetuate many of their traditions. Documentation available from the Tourist Office.
Behind the SNCF railway station at Plan-Envers, take the road on the right, which starts off flat then zigzags upwards through the meadows, following the railway line to Les Mayens des Biolles (a former coaching inn and stables). Continue along the path to Notre Dame des Montets chapel. Take the time to visit Les Mayens des Biolles and the chapel. Walk back towards Le Buet and take the second arch on the left under the railway line and go on to the hamlet of Les Montets. Cross the Eau Noire stream and walk along the departmental road to the hamlet of Le Nant then Morzay via a small road on the left. Continue on this road towards Plan-Droit to reach the hamlet of Le Crot. From there, carry on until Le Sizeray. Head for the church to see its typical snow fence. Carry on toward Le Mollard then Barberine (visit the museum, which is open in July and August).
Return route: - follow the same route up to Le Chef-Lieu. • From the hamlet of Barberine, head down a 100 metres or so on to the RD 1506 road, then up through a clearing on your right. Near the oratory, there are some steps to take you over the railway tunnel. The path then meets up with the Eau Noire path that climbs up on the right towards Vallorcine.
- By train: the Swiss station is 10 min away (border - ID papers required).
