Tour of the Chamonix Cemetery
We’ll take a trip back in time through the town of Chamonix. A moving tour of a place steeped in history Reservations required
We will remember mountaineering heroes such as Edward Whymper, Louis Lachenal, and Lionel Terray. We will stop at the burial vault of the guides from the Compagnie des Guides, whose names serve as a reminder of the tragic fate of men who “fell” while performing their duties. We’ll remember those whom the war took up into the mountains. We’ll learn about the young people from outside Chamonix who were passionate about mountaineering and lost their lives on our peaks. We’ll pause in front of the wall covered with plaques in memory of “those” whose bodies were never recovered. It will also be an opportunity to remember the Simonds, Payots, Ravanels, Couttets, Frison-Roche, and so many other professionals and amateurs who have shaped the history of this very special valley.
A visit to the cemetery thus allows us to reflect on this very special world that is the Chamonix Valley.
