Holy Week commemorates Christ's death, burial, descent into Hell and resurrection. Established in the 8th century, the Office des Ténèbres takes place at the height of the Easter celebrations, during the last three days of Holy Week, and combines the office of Matines (the office at the end of the night) and Lauds (the office at the beginning of the day), hence the name "Office des Ténèbres". In all of 17th-century French music, few works can touch the listener as deeply as the Leçons de Ténèbres by François COUPERIN (1668-1733). Composed between 1713 and 1717, the three Mercredy Saint lessons are the only ones to have survived.
