The Chamonix Guides Association: 9 key figures that make it unique.

200 years

Founded in 1821, the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Guides’ Association is quite simply the world’s first guides’ association. The original. The pioneer. The one that invented the collective organization of guiding and inspired mountaineers beyond the Alps. Two centuries later, it remains the largest in terms of membership. The same DNA forged by sharing and respect, the same passion for nature, and a vision firmly rooted in the present.

Too many firsts to count

The first ascent of Mont Blanc by Jacques Balmat and Dr. Paccard in 1786, of course. The Grandes Jorasses and the Matterhorn by Michel Croz in 1865. The first 8,000-meter peak by Louis Lachenal on Annapurna in 1950. The list of the Compagnie’s guides reads like a who’s who of global mountaineering. From the pioneers to the younger generation that continues to blaze trails across the globe, the Compagnie has not only accompanied the history of mountaineering—it has written it.

2 Pillars (Still Relevant Today)

It was following a fatal accident on Mont Blanc that the Chamonix Guides’ Association was officially founded, based on two founding principles that remain in effect today: the “relief fund,” to support guides and their families in the face of the uncertainties of a high-risk profession; the “rotation system,” ensuring a fair distribution of work. A collective and supportive vision of the mountains.

1 (Very) Demanding Training Program

Becoming a guide or mountain leader isn’t just a whim for a career change. The selection process is rigorous from the very first interviews, followed by a qualifying exam consisting of technical tests, training spread over several years, internships, and ongoing evaluations. In Chamonix, the ENSA trains high-mountain guides over a four-year period. Each year, out of approximately 180 candidates, only about 50 will make it to the end. Guiding is something you have to earn. And it’s a skill you hone throughout your entire life.

3 dates to mark on your calendar in August: 13, 14, 15

The Guides’ Festival is much more than just local folklore. It features a ceremony to call the guides to order, a blessing of the ropes and ice axes, and tributes to the elders… Tradition and creativity come together in an atmosphere that is as solemn as it is festive. The mountains, celebrated as a collective event.

160 + 60

Approximately 160 high-mountain guides (for glacier, ski touring, and mountaineering trips), 60 mountain guides (for nature-based snowshoe excursions), and about twenty staff members to coordinate this whole group. A diverse range of profiles, generations coming together, and a senior guide over 75 years old who’s still active. Few female guides (4 in 2023), but the landscape is changing. There’s bound to be a pro who’s the right fit for you.

An endless array of activities

Mountaineering, ski touring, ice climbing, via ferrata, canyoning, trekking, paragliding, big wall climbing, seminars, kids’ outings… To each their own mountain, from first steps to a lifelong passion. With one thing in common: some of the strictest guiding standards and a commitment to putting people before performance.

1 essential quality

Adaptability. To the weather, the terrain, the people, and now to climate change. Here, we’re not talking about abstract ecology but lived reality: melting glaciers, changing routes, practices that need rethinking. Less focus on reaching the summit, more on education and immersion. And always, passing on the knowledge.

1 major challenge

The greatest challenge is no longer verticality, but global warming. The Company adapts, innovates, and raises awareness. Because in Chamonix, the mountains aren’t just a backdrop. They’re a living, fragile, demanding world. And a collective responsibility.
