André Contamine, l'euphorie des montagnes

in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
Presentation

Come and discover or rediscover the photos of André Contamine, mountaineer and teacher-guide at ENSA.

Following the exhibition "L'Euphorie des Montagnes: André Contamine et l'alpinisme des années 1950 - 1960" (The Euphoria of the Mountains: André Contamine and mountaineering in the 1950s and 1960s), which took place in 2023 at the Maison de la Culture et du Patrimoine in Chamonix, the ENSA documentation center has decided to recover part of the exhibition and host it within the walls of the school.

A talented photographer throughout his life, André Contamine (1919-1985) was best known for his unprecedented ascents of the Mont Blanc massif. Legendary peaks such as Triolet, Dru, Aiguille Verte, Moine, Aiguille du Midi, Peigne, Petites Jorasses and Mont Blanc du Tacul include at least one Contamine route, often classic and renowned for its beauty, now coveted by rope parties the world over. From wall to wall, from image to image, all drawn from the Contamine collection, the exhibition evokes the man himself, his career as an inventor of new routes, his adventurous companions (Guido Magnone, Louis Lachenal, Lionel Terray) and the techniques of classic alpinism, in rock and ice, of which he was the tireless teacher for over thirty years.
