The population of Chamonix in the 16th century "the salt tax of 1561" Lecture by Bruno Gachet Doctor of History

In 1561, Duke Emmanuel-Philibert ordered an enumeration of the entire Savoyard population to ensure the levying of the salt tax, the famous "gabelle du sel". In each town and village, all families were counted house by house. This was the first nominative census we know of. Through the analysis of these exceptional archives, Bruno Gachet invites you to discover the life of our ancestors in the 16th century. The example of Chamonix will be highlighted.
