This visit will make you discover a representative sample of the chapels scattered in the hamlets of the commune of Les Houches: Le Lac, Vaudagne, Le Fouilly, La Griaz, Le Pont.
The chapel of Christ the King, integrated in the monumental statue located on the hillside of Coupeau, is representative of the Art Deco style of the 1930s.
A little history...
From the 16th to the 18th century, the inhabitants of each village built a chapel, a sacred place of proximity where saints were invoked to protect them from possible epidemics and natural risks.
In the 19th century, the construction of new chapels was not so much the result of the persistence of the tradition of the popular cult of the saints as of a renewal of Catholic fervor. This was initially a reaction to the French Revolution, then, after 1870, to Republican ideas.
